Orphanage Kiserian

Sustainable Energy for the Kiserian orphanage (September 2009 – November 2011)

Televisie kijken is ook mogelijk, een utopie voor de kinderen.

Even watching TV is an option now, a world opens up for these children.

Currently, the Endeleo Foundation is in the process to create durable sun and wind energy for an orphanage in Kiserian in Tanzania. There is a need for electricity in order to keep food for longer, light and ironing the childrens school clothes. Electricity is also essential for the medical aid point which will be build here. The orphans as well as the inhabitants of Kiserian village have to travel long distances for medical assistance, often on foot. Not long ago, an orphan died because medical help could not be reached in time. With the arrival of the medical aid point, healthcare in the area will improve dramatically for the orphans as well as the local community.

Objectives
The primary objective of this project is to implement and supply durable energy. This includes the installation of a windmill and 7 solar panels together with a conductor and batteries to generate electricity for the orphanage and the medical aid post. The short term goal is that 2 of the orphans and an employee will follow a course, which will include durable energy knowledge, at technical college to become technical installers. After this, they will be able to carry out maintenance tasks and small reparations with as a result that the project can continue on a long term basis.
The long term objective is that the living circumstances of the orphans and the local community will structurally improve by the arrival of durable energy. Apart from all this, the durable energy in the Kiserian community can be used as an example for other communities in the area.
Millenniumgoals
This project contributes directly to Millennium Goal 7. Durable energy helps the local protection of the environment. There is no emission of carbon or other hazardous substances using this form of energy. Natures as well as local social-culture relationships are not disturbed so these can continue to exist in the future. Indirectly, the project contributes to Millennium Goals 4, 5 and 6. As a result of the opening of the medical aid post, fewer children from the orphanage as well as the local community will die. They will have access to medicine, vaccinations and general healthcare. Education and early indication of health problems could ensure that fewer mothers die and diseases such as malaria can be treated.

Targetgroup
There are 42 children currently living in the Kiserian orphanage, their ages vary between 12 months to 19 years. They are all from different parts in Tanzania. Nearly all of them are orphans, some of the children have one parent who is incapable of caring for them. Many of these children would have ended up living on the streets, had they not been taken in by the orphanage. No street children are being taken in by the orphanage. Most children have been brought in by close family or an official institution such as the police or community officials. Many of these childrens stories are harrowing to hear.
